Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to be creative and drawn by the arts. She worked as a night nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed during the day for the love of art, literature and theatre. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was conscious of her social status and taught her how to make use of the arts to find a way of expressing herself. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies.
